Where to go in Alaska?

mandy01h asked:

I am interested in taking a trip with my husband to Alaska. I have no idea which town, city etc… to go to and then what?
I want to see the scenery and wildlife. I also have heard there are glacier cruises I should take. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Alaska is a huge state and tourism is a big part of our economy. The entire state is 1 huge picture perfect view of great scenery and chock full of wildlife! Look at a map. Think about if you want to be near a big city or small town. Are you flying in? Coming in by boat? Check out the Alaska sites and take notes. We have dozens of glaciers. Welcome to Alaska!
Bring a camera and a journal. Make wonderful memories.

I’ll give the Top Hits version - the most spectacular places that are the easiest to get to:

Denali National Park. Make a reservation for a bus trip along the park road (no private cars allowed). You WILL see Dall sheep, grizzlies, and caribou. And possibly moose, golden eagles, wolves, and a 20,320-foot mountain.

You’ll likely make connections airline in Anchorage. The Native Cultural Center is very nicely done. The history museum downtown is good. I suggest people check out the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage because it has one of every land critter in the state. Best AFTER you’ve tried to see them in the wild.

So that’s 3 days at Denali and 2 in Anchorage.

More time than that? Head down to Seward for the SeaLife Center Aquarium (very nice) and a day cruise in Ressurection Bay (dolphins, whales, puffins, seals, glaciers). On the way to Seard, the drive is spectacular, the Double Musky in Girdwood is good. Portage Glacier Visitor Center is nice. Summit lodge is a good food stop - okay food, great views. Ray’s restaurant on the waterfront in Seward is good.

Still more time, go to Homer, enjoy the scenery, check out the art gallery, go out on a charter boat and catch a salmon or a few halibut. Or a sightseeing boat around Kachemak Bay.
