Hey Jennifer,
Alaska is a great destination. I work with an adventure travel company. If you decide you want a privately guided tour or a small ship cruise, let me know. We have itineraries on our website along with a lot of info on the destination. here is a link.
Enjoy.

As mentioned Alaska is the greatest destination, and toss in the Yukon Territory of Canada, and wallah! A cruise/tour is a great way to see it all and not worry about the little details.
I am tossing in a couple of web sites for you to look at including the one from my company. We specialize in Alaska, in fact it is all we do.
Let me know if I can answer any other questions or concerns.

One of the best resources for you is The Milepost. I used that on my trip to the Yukon and Alaska last year and it was the best resource for planning my trip.
Personally, I’m not a fan of package tours (but there are others who really like them) so I’d stay away from those. Are you planning on camping or staying in motels/hotels?
I’ve also attached a link to my blog of my trip. If you get to Chicken, try to take in the historical tour - it’s run out of the campground with the gas station/gift shop down by the creek. The queues for the ferry can be quite long at Dawson going from east to west, but not so long going the other way, so you might want to consider going through Chicken and then on to Dawson.
Feel free to contact me through my profile if you’ve got any questions.

Most of the cruise ships offer land tours but Holland America seems to be the more prominent. I can tell you that as a Yukon resident they are the ones we see the most often during the tourist season. You can also take the Alaska ferry along the inside passage if you decide you want to put the trip together yourself. Try and see Valdez Alaska if you can. It’s a beautiful spot with some great day cruises out in Prince William Sound. I would have to agree that the Milepost is one of the best resources around. We’ve used it numerous times for road trips as it marks rest areas as well as some interesting side stops that would have been easy to miss. Chicken isn’t much to look at but it’s neat to say you’ve been there and it’s got some cool history. The Top of the World hwy is an amazing drive although mostly gravel so be prepared for some bumps. Dawson is a lot of fun and make sure to stop at Gertie’s for a bit of saloon flavor as well as the casino. They have nightly Can Can shows and it’s simply a fun place ot be.
