The Princess Cruise Lines website provides a way to virtually tour the different kinds of cabins. It will also give you answers to many of your questions…

Calling the actual Princess Cruise Line would probably be the best way to go about this upgrading

Talk to your travel agent, they can help if you’re interesting in booking an upgrade.
As for free upgrades, as a rule if Princess can upgrade you, they will. Unless you specifically request on your booking not to be upgraded, they will automatically upgrade you if a better cabin becomes available. However, upgrades are typically within the same type of cabin i.e. from a Category K inside to a Category J or JJ inside.
On rare occasions they may make an upgrade from a high categoy inside to a low category outside, and inside cabins are never upgraded to balconies or suites.

They sometimes upgrade you if they have empty staterooms. I have a friend who went on an Alaskan cruise, and got upgraded from a cheap inside to a high oceanview for this reason. They do this to consolidate the work for housekeeping. You may be able to purchase an upgrade before you go, subject to availability. Or lastly, you may purchase an upgrade onboard, again subject to availability.

You need to call your agent and let them know.
In most cases they will not upgrade with out costs increases to you!
